I believe this painting is one of the two last paintings I painted before my paintings were made digitally. It is a perfect example of what I call my ‘machine imaginaire’ work in which I apply an invented system of rules that become the basis for the finished composition. I set out to make two still-life paintings composed of squares within a grid with the ground color of each painting being green. Using only red, green, blue as colors, I assigned each color two numbers of a die. I remember wanting the painted squares to coalesce toward the center of each canvas and pull away from the edges. I arbitrarily selected a square and then rolled the die to determine the color I would paint the square. Often I would roll the die a second or third time painting the same square a different color based on the number appearing on the die.
